WHAT YOU WILL DO   
As a Paver Field Service Technician with Thompson Machinery, you’ll be out in the field working hands‑on with Caterpillar paving equipment such as asphalt pavers, screeds, and rollers. Your day will involve traveling to customer job sites, diagnosing and fixing equipment issues, performing routine maintenance, and helping keep machines running safely and efficiently. You’ll work independently, use your troubleshooting skills, and communicate directly with customers about what their equipment needs. You’ll also complete service reports and follow safety standards, all while representing Thompson Machinery in a professional and customer‑focused way.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES ​
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair CAT paving and compaction equipment including asphalt pavers, rollers, and related systems
  • Perform preventive maintenance and inspections on paving equipment in accordance with CAT and Thompson Machinery standards
  • Troubleshoot diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and emissions components
  • Use Caterpillar ET, service manuals, and diagnostic software to identify and resolve issues
  • Complete work orders, service reports, and inspection documentation accurately and timely
  • Communicate clearly with customers regarding equipment conditions, repair recommendations, and PM needs
  • Operate service trucks, tooling, and diagnostic equipment safely and responsibly
  • Maintain a clean, organized service vehicle and job site
  • Follow all Thompson Machinery and Caterpillar safety policies and procedures
  • Participate in ongoing Caterpillar and OEM training as required

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS 


 
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE 
  • High school diploma or GED (technical degree preferred)
  • 3+ years of experience working on heavy equipment; paving or asphalt equipment experience strongly preferred
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and powertrain components
  • Ability to read and interpret service manuals, schematics, and technical instructions
  • Valid driver’s license with ability to maintain DOT requirements (if applicable)
  • Ability to work independently in a field service environment
  • Strong troubleshooting, time management, and customer service skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous Caterpillar dealer experience
  • Experience with CAT paving products (AP series pavers, screeds, rollers, etc.)
  • CAT ET diagnostic experience
  • Welding, fabrication, or advanced hydraulic troubleshooting experience
