CONCRETE WORK AND DECORATIVE PROJECTS
H & J Concrete, LLC has become known as a middle Tennessee area leader in concrete work, hardscaping, and construction. This family owned, locally owned business – headquartered in Columbia, Tennessee – has been in business since 2006, but the family expertise in the industry goes back even further, says owner Alex Monsivais.
“My father Jacinto did this kind of work for several years in Texas, working for others,” Monsivais relates. “Concrete work is a very competitive business in Texas,dominated by many big companies. My dad got offered work in the middle Tennessee area, and came here with the goal of starting a business for himself. He realized that it was a smaller area with many more opportunities.”
Jacinto and his brother Hector combined the first letters of their first names to establish H & J Concrete in 2006; Hector eventually left the business, in 2011. Monsivais recalls that the company had eight employees at the beginning, and most of the work they did was driveways and monolithic slabs (foundation systems constructed as one single concrete pour that consists of a concrete slab with thickened portions of the slab under load bearing walls and all perimeter edges that take the place of footers).
“Then we started doing commercial as well, such as sidewalks,” he continues. “We had a larger crew by them, and more jobs. Originally, all our jobs were in the Columbia, Spring Hill, and Chapel Hill area, but in 2010 we expanded into the Nashville and Murfreesboro markets. Today, we do work as far away as Clarksville – basically within a 100-mile radius of Columbia.”
EVERYTHING FROM DRIVEWAY CONSTRUCTION TO DECORATIVE PROJECTS
For Monsivais, who was born in Acuna, Mexico and raised in Texas, his day-to-day focus is on estimating jobs and seeking out new customers. The company now has approximately 55 employees – including subs, office personnel, and drivers – and typically has six or seven crews working.
About H & J Concrete’s crews, Thompson Machinery Sales Representative Roth Nunley comments, “They are unbelievable, a really great bunch of guys.”
The services offered by H & J Concrete cover a broad spectrum: driveway resurfacing, decorative concrete (a durable and environmentally friendly flooring option), stamped concrete (which combines the look, texture, and designs of other flooring such as tile with concrete’s durability and sustainability), plus concrete sidewalks, water features, counter tops, and outdoor kitchen hardscapes.
Monsavais says the decorative concrete projects are the most challenging, and reports that the company’s biggest project to date was a five-mile-long sidewalk in Franklin, Tennessee, related to a city landscaping project; H & J completed this job over the course of three weeks. He adds, “We’re currently doing multiple slab projects, and do a lot of work for one of the country’s largest homebuilders.
We still do primarily residential work, which keeps us busy. We’re currently doing several subdivision jobs at the same time.”
H & J’S CAT MACHINES PROVIDE RELIABILITY AND PRODUCTIVITY
The H & J Concrete equipment fleet includes 15 machines – twelve skid steer loaders and three mini excavators. “The Cat machines are definitely the best,” Monsavais states. “We don’t have issues with them, whereas with some other makes, we had issues even when they were brand new.
“The service on our Cat machines is so much better. Thompson performs our warranty work and bigger service jobs. And our operators love the Cat machines – they say they’re stronger and faster.”
H & J’s Cat equipment includes two 259D compact track loaders, two 289D compact track loaders, and a 304E2 mini excavator. The firm also rents equipment as needed from Thompson’s Cat Rental Store.
