Heavy Equipment Field Service and Repairs
Equipment breakdowns always seem to happen when you least expect them. When your excavator won’t start, your loader’s hydraulics fail or your dozer has engine trouble, you need reliable technicians who can come to your location. Waiting days for repairs or trying to move disabled equipment on your own can cost thousands of dollars in lost productivity.
At Thompson Machinery, we understand that transporting your machines to the repair shop is not always possible. That’s why we operate a fleet of over 50 fully equipped field service vehicles that bring expert repairs directly to your worksite in Middle Tennessee, West Tennessee and North Mississippi. Our mobile technicians can tackle everything from emergency breakdowns to scheduled maintenance, helping keep your equipment running efficiently and your projects on track.
Comprehensive Repairs and Preventive Maintenance
Our field services cover everything your equipment needs to stay productive. Whether you’re dealing with mechanical failures or planning preventive care, our technicians bring the tools and expertise directly to you. Several examples of our capabilities include:
Engine Service
When your engine starts showing problems, you don’t necessarily need to haul the machine to a nearby shop. Our technicians have laptops preloaded with the latest Cat® diagnostic programs to quickly and accurately identify your issues.
We can repair or replace many of the defective or worn engine components on the spot, including bearings, pistons and gears. After the repairs, our technicians will test your engine and related systems to ensure they meet Cat specifications, including calibrating the necessary components for optimal engine efficiency.
Hydraulics Repairs and Maintenance
Hydraulic system failures can shut down your equipment entirely, whether you’re dealing with a blown hose, leaking cylinder or pressure problems. Our field service vehicles carry hoses, fittings and other replacement components to handle most of your hydraulic repair needs on-site.
We also perform hydraulic system maintenance, including cleaning, lubricating, fluid changes, filter replacements and pressure testing to prevent failures and extend the life of your equipment.
Welding
Structural repairs and modifications often require welding work that can’t wait until you get your machine to a shop. Our mobile welding capabilities handle everything from cracked frames and broken tracks to parts fabrication and custom modifications. Whether you need emergency repairs to get back to work or have a welding project as part of planned maintenance, our certified welders bring professional-grade equipment, materials and safety gear directly to your location.
Fluid Sampling
Regular fluid analysis helps identify problems before they can impact operational efficiency or shut down your machines entirely. Our technicians collect samples from engines, transmissions, hydraulics and other critical systems as part of our SOS™ Fluid Analysis program. We take the samples to our lab for comprehensive analysis that detects wear metals, contamination and other indicators that help predict maintenance needs and prevent breakdowns.
The service includes detailed evaluations and recommendations that we mail, fax or email based on your preference.
Undercarriage Service
Track and undercarriage components endure constant abuse and need regular attention to prevent premature wear. Our field technicians inspect track tension, replace worn pads, adjust idlers and handle other undercarriage maintenance to keep your machines moving smoothly. We also perform emergency undercarriage repairs when broken tracks or damaged components keep your machine from moving.
Preventive Maintenance
Scheduled maintenance in the field saves time over transporting your equipment to the shop. Our technicians perform oil changes, filter replacements, greasing and safety inspections at your facility. We work around your schedule to minimize disruption while giving your equipment the necessary care to operate accurately and reliably.
Technical Analysis Inspections
Our technical analysis inspections provide detailed equipment evaluations that help you make informed decisions about repairs and maintenance. Depending on your needs, we offer two levels of inspection.
- Level 1: Level 1 analysis includes a visual inspection using the Cat Inspect app with detailed photos, condition data from your machine’s electronic control module, scheduled oil sampling from all compartments, detailed repair estimates and hardware evaluation for equipment monitoring.
- Level 2: Level 2 technical analysis includes everything from Level 1, plus pressure checks, cycle time evaluations, cylinder drift testing and undercarriage measurements. Every machine receiving a technical analysis inspection also gets thoroughly cleaned, so your equipment looks as good as it runs.
When to Request Field Service
Field service makes sense when convenience and speed make on-site repairs the better choice. Choose field service when you can’t afford downtime and need repairs completed quickly to keep projects moving. It’s also the right choice when equipment size or breakdown location makes transportation to a shop difficult or impossible.
Field service means you can perform your regular daily responsibilities instead of accompanying your equipment to the shop. This approach saves time, reduces transportation costs and gets your equipment back in service quickly.
Emergency Equipment Field Services
At Thompson Machinery, many of our facilities offer after-hours emergency service for critical breakdowns that can’t wait until the morning. We recommend contacting your local Thompson Machinery service center to learn more about their availability before you need it. Having emergency options in place before problems occur means you get help as quickly as possible when breakdowns threaten your operation.
